The Tamil film ‘˜I’ has even intrigued the audiences of Hindi films. But can the movie in Hindi have the same impact as it has in Tamil? The phrases or certain things can’t be translated literally and in such cases they shouldn’t even be translated.
Language no bar when it comes to good content. The Tamil film ‘I’ has even intrigued the audiences of Hindi films.
But can the movie in Hindi have the same impact as it has in Tamil?
Language is actually a very key factor as all the dialogues, songs and the entire script is based on what language the movie is. When the movie is made for the Bollywood audience then it is important to make the translations as aptly as possible.
When I say apt I do not mean literal translation. The phrases or certain things can’t be translated literally and in such cases they shouldn’t even be translated. We can have little parts of Tamil in Hindi films.
We have ‘aata maajhi satakli’ in a Hindi song, don’t we? Then why can’t we have certain phrases in Tamil when the movie is made in Hindi?
Certain things lose their charm when translated in other language.
For example, the line ‘Modha Dabaa Paathaen Unna’ that means the first time he saw her. Now when we hear the song in Hindi, the lyrics start something like this: Dekhi Aisi Item Chori.
Imagine the plight of the person who doesn’t understand Tamil and opted to watch the movie in Hindi. How do you think anyone would react after hearing a line like ‘Dekhi aisi item chori’.
Like seriously, what was the lyricist Irshad Kamil even thinking…
Oh and you thought this was it then the most hilarious part is the song named – ‘issak taari’. “Holys**t” this is going to be the exclamation from all my Tamilian friends who still didn’t glimpse through the Hindi version of the movie.
So basically when in Tamil the song played ‘Mersalaayitten’ it is a description of a situation.
Imagine the situation when the guy happens to love at first sight…his confused state of mind
This expression of the state of mind is literally translated as akalmaari, issak taari. Wow like seriously wtf!!!
Instead of raping the song and making a joke of it certain things should rather be just kept as it is.
Now take the line from the song – Tum todo na dil mera
Ennodu Nee Irundhaal
Uyirodu Naan Iruppaen
Meaning if you were mine then I would truly live or in other words you make me alive.
Here the lyricist Irshad Kamil didn’t exactly translate literally but showed his filmy skills completely destroying the depth of the song.
The song goes as “Tum Todo naa dil mera”. Not everything has to be about ‘dil todna’. Couldn’t it be framed better?
We all know of the famous song from the movie ‘Happy New Year’ where they made a song on this very concept. The song had lines like:
Gayi bhains paani mein – buffalo going in the water.
You don’t get the same meaning in English. Just like Hindi phrases when translated to English it becomes a joke similarly the same thing happens in other languages.
