The old good days of Indian television – These sitcoms from those years really make me nostalgic and in retrospect when I think of the television I grew up,
Sharing some really cool sitcoms from 1980s and 1990s:
I want to start with the Satish Shah one – Yeh Jo hai Zindagi.
The characters of Ranjit and Renu Verma played by Shafi Inamdar and Swaroop Sampat respectively along with Renu’s brother Raja played by Rakesh Bedi became a huge hit.
The main twist in the serial was the multiple characters played by Satish Shah. He was anointed as the ‘King of Comedy’.
Every episode he played a different character.
He would be a toy seller in one episode and a police inspector in another. Satish Shah played all the characters brilliantly.

The first season was a huge success. The second season was however not as famous as the first one.
We are used to the on-going saas-bahu saga showcased in almost all the serials. There is one sitcom from the past that actually explored the insightful relation of a wife and her mother-in-law.
‘Tu Tu Main Main’ is the sitcom I am talking about.
Both Reema Lagoo and Supriya Pilgaonkar through their exemplary performances created laughter riots.

Talking of saas bahu fights let me go to the joint family situations. Don’t worry I am not going to talk of the big extended confusing joint family dramas of Ekta Kapoor serials.
This sitcom from the 1990s called ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh’ was about a big joint family comprising of three generations.
The Diwan family and their daily situations with their never-say-die attitude created the feel good and positive vibes. This sitcom went on to become a huge success.
Another equally successful sitcom was ‘Hum Paanch’.
It is also regarded as an all-time favourite along with ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh’.
‘Hum Panch’ was about the 5 sisters with each one possessing an extreme specific trait. The eldest one was always ready to fight for justice of women; second one was a topper in studies but had huge specs and also hearing aid.
Third one was a case of beauty without brains, fourth sister was tom boyish who would always be up for a fight an last but not the least the fifth one was very talkative.
These sisters were big trouble makers for their poor father played by Ashok Saraf. Helplessly he tried to figure out meaning and sense to the new weird ventures of his daughters.
These sitcoms from those years really make me nostalgic and in retrospect when I think of the television I grew up, I feel there was such a fee good factor about the content shown at that time.
