If chai where to be a girl on a matrimonial site, we feel she would have been the most desirable one! We are looking for the best companion for your cutting chai; tell us what you would pair your cuppa with!

Chai (Tea), I prefer calling it chai, as saying so makes me feel closer to it. So yes, Chai is the most famous beverage in the country and most of us day can’t start our day without a kadak cup of chai. Most of us can’t get through the day without a couple (Mostly on a Monday like today!). You could ‘chill’ at a café or hangout at Starbucks but when it comes to the feeling of having the right beverage; most of us still vouch for the good old chai.

We have heard numerous fables on how this drink came to India. The most common one goes back a thousand years. Tea was in fact a medicinal drink back in China. As per research the first cup of tea was had sometime in the 3rd century AD, during the Shang Dynasty. With kings stepping out of their countries to invade other regions, tea too started travelling. That is how it came to India. The tea drinking culture became popular only during the British Raj.

By the 17th century, East India Company started producing tea commercially in our country. When I first heard this fact at a Tea tasting, I pounced off my chair and asked, “What did people in India wake up to before the introduction of yea?”, I obviously got a few laughs but seriously, I am so smitten by my morning cuppa that there are days that I feel I wake up only because I want to have that Adrak wali chai!

Today, India is one of the largest producers of tea and also consumes 70 per cent of what it consumes. There are various ways of making your tea. You could even pick a condiment of your choice to add to your tea. That could make for a new article all together! Today’s discussion point is finding the perfect combination for a perfect cup of chai.

We asked around and made an elaborate compilation of things people pair their chai with. Here are a few of the responses we got off twitter!

Chai + Parle-G
This one is my favourite. Most days, this makes for my breakfast.

Chai + Puffed rice
This came from a Bengali colleague! She is also watching her weight.

Chai + Maska Pav
Very close to the city of Mumbai. When in Mumbai, a trip Churchgate station at mid-night for bun maska pav and chai will be an eye opener. Till then, take my word for it!

Chai + Rusk
Rusk is mostly used for babies who are teething. For most grown-up teetotaller, the crunch from the rusk and chai is a perfect set!

Vada Pav + Chai
Mumbai’s favourite lunch, Vada pav with chai comes handy when eating on a go. As a sales executive, he will tell you the pleasure of vada pav and tea, both warm!

Chai + Classic Milds
Business ideas are made and developed over this combination. Fondly known as a sutta break, cutting chai always comes in the picture making it a longer break!

Chai’s seasonal fling!
Let the rain gods get to work, our social media timelines get flooded with romance between tea an freshly made kanda bhaji (pakodas). During Diwali, chakri replaces biscuits.

Chai’s guju effect
A Guajarati girl friend of mine, once managed to eat an entire chapatti along with her afternoon tea (Yes, dipped it in tea)! That sure did put me off a bit but then I guess that is her choice! Her mother on the other hand offered me Mathri and theplas along with my tea.

Chai + Nankatai
On most roadtrip or tea stalls by the highway, you will find bars stuffed with nankatai. My second favourite after Parle-G.

High tea companion
Cream rolls and cakes/muffins/scones your leafy tea could go perfect with these.

Tea is so humble that it can complement any food. Tea drinking culture and pairing vary across time zones and regions. You feel we have missed out on something? Then tell us what do you like having your tea with! *TeaCheers*
