India’s Somdev Devvarman is through to round 2. Somdev beat Luckas Lacko in a five set match. Rohan Bopanna’s doubles first round match was cancelled due to rain. Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Potro and Lleyton Hewitt are all through to round 2. In women’s singles, Serena Williams match was cancelled due to rain and will take place later today. Na Li, Agnieszka Radwanska and Jie Zheng are through to round 3. Jie Zheng beat Venus Williams while Ivo Karlovic beat James Blake. James Blake had announced that he would retire post US Open.
Indian Presence on Day 4
Four Indian’s will take to court today for round one matches. In men’s doubles first round, Mahesh Bhupathi and Philipp Petzschner will face Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil while fourth seeds Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek will face Jarkko Nieminen and Dmitry Tursunov. Divij Sharan and Yen-Hsun Lu will face Robin Hasse and Igor Sijsling in the first round as well. In women’s doubles first round match today, tenth seeds Sania Mirza and Jie Zheng will face Annika Beck and Monica Puig. It should be a good day for the Indians, expect all of them to go through to the next round.
Men’s Singles
In Men’s singles round two, Roger Federer faces Carlos Berlocq while Rafael Nadal faces Rogerio Dutra Silva. Nadal’s match is scheduled for the evening session. Fourth seed David Ferrer faces Roberto Bautista Agut in round two today. But the match to watch out for in the second round is John Isner against Gael Monfils. In head to head both are tied 3-3. Though, Isner being the higher ranked player is the favorite to win.
In other matches, Milos Raonic, Sam Querrey and Richard Gasquet would play their second round matches today as well.
Women’s Singles
Serena William’s will face Galina Voskoboeva and Caroline Wozniacki will face Chanelle Scheepers in round two. In the first match of the day at Arthur Ashe stadium, an all Italian clash, number four seed Sara Errani will face Flavia Pennetta in round two. Number eight seed German Angelique Kerber faces Eugenie Bouchard of Canada while number two seed Victoria Azarenka faces Aleksandra Wozniak in round two. The seeded players mentioned above should be able to go through to the next round.
In other matches, Ana Ivanovic, Sabine Lisicki and Svetlana Kuznetsova would play their second round matches today.
Rain has hampered play in the last two days, hopefully the skies stay clear on Thursday and we get to see good tennis.
