Apart from stereotypical qualities like cheerfulness and superficiality, here are some core personality traits that we tend to overlook…
- Need a nod from someone: More often than not, shopaholics are open to suggestions and generally tag along a couple of friends for a shopping spree. They may be spending on whatever catches their fancy and their pockets can afford, but they always look for an approval from a friend or anyone who accompanies them. They also seek suggestions for the shop owners before finally deciding what to buy. The good news is that if you are a shopaholic, having a kind, agreeable disposition will make it easier to establish a cordial relationship with shop owners and co-shoppers. You may even get things on a discounted price!
- Can’t control impulse: Shopaholics have great difficulty in controlling their impulses and stopping themselves from spending on things, even if they are low on money. Even during the last days of the month, when they have generally exhausted a big chunk from their salary, if they happen to be walking around the streets and like something, they will spend. If you are also suffering from this, you can deal with the problem if you identify the underlying cost of it.
- Have tendency for emotional instability: Studies have found that apart from mood swings and a tendency for emotional instability, shopaholics also susceptible to anxiety and depression. They may also be suffering from loneliness and through shopping they find ways to be surrounded with people and also connecting with them. If you want to treat this, look at meditation and occasionally talking to friends and family. It will be better than short-lived shopping thrills.
- Live in fantasy: They are far from reality and live inside their bubble. They often fantasize about the thrill associated with shopping, the clothes or accessories donned by an actress in a movie, or found a liking towards anything worn by a friend or colleague. They can imagine about all the positive consequences of buying an object, and they can get lost in a fantasy world to escape the harsh realities of life.
- Are materialistic: While it may be an understood thing that shopaholics would be materialistic than others, it is also a fact that they may not be interested in owning things. They are less driven to acquiring materialist objects unlike other buyers and that’s why they usually spend on things they don’t have any particular use of.
