Stanford University in association with Coursera provides a free online course to tell you about the fundamentals of GPS and diverse range of uses of satellite navigation.
Does it not feel great when you don’t have to rely on hard copy of maps to ensure that you don’t get lost?
That you can know exactly where you are at all times. The Global Positioning System is a navigation tool that has become extremely popular because of its wide range of uses, especially if you are an avid traveller.
A little inquisitiveness into the functioning of the whole system, made a University launch a special course on the fundamentals and working of the GPS and other satellite navigation systems. Today, the Global Positioning System (GPS) is installed in over three billion devices across the world. To gain a deeper understanding of GPS and its role in our lives, Stanford University in association with Coursera provides a free online course to tell you about the fundamentals of GPS and diverse range of uses of satellite navigation.
Through animated online lectures and a set of experiments enabled by the widespread availability of GPS-enabled smart phones and tablets, candidates will be able to connect online learning to real-world experience. The best part of the course is that even people who do not own a laptop or desktop computer can access the online lectures, as they will be able to view lectures and complete assignments via their mobile device.
Eligibility and Qualifications
There are no boundaries as far as an educational stream is concerned. Also the age factor is not a consideration. However, as the course involves mathematics and equations, it is strongly recommended that an undergraduate education in technical discipline would prove better to understand things.
Duration & Syllabus
The course lasts for 4 weeks. The course syllabus consists of modules that teach you about the fundamentals of GPS, Pseudo ranges, Orbits and signals, Receiver Design Basics, Assisted GPS, The future of GPS and Satellite navigation and much more.
Format
Each week, a number of modules of the course will be released on the website, which will be accompanied by short quiz exercises. Once in a week a GPS laboratory will be released where candidates will have to use their GPS device to collect data and then contribute to the class community.
On completion of the course you will receive a certificate stating your accomplishments and your participation in the online learning experiment. To register for the course log onto www.coursera.org/course/gpslab
