There are times when you wished that you studied and learned about things that interest you, from the best faculties in the world.
Thanks to the advancing technology, distance is not anymore a constraint that contributes to a list of barriers for education.
While it has been quite some time since distance education gained importance among students all over the world, an online education platform that allows you to choose from over a wide variety of subjects, a subject you wish to study, is unheard of.
Coursera is an online education platform that offers online courses for anyone to take, for free.
Founded by Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller from Stanford University in April 2012, Coursera works with universities from over fifty countries in the world, to offer massive open online courses (MOOCs).
As per a report more than 9.2 million users registered themselves for about 750 courses, until September 2014.
The approach focuses on helping students learn better and faster, irrespective of age, distance, gender or region. The highest visited online education platform is based on four principles, namely, Effectiveness of online learning, Mastery learning, Peer assessments, and Blended learning.
How does it work
Because online learning plays a significant role in shaping our lives in today’s date, students get to learn a lot through the videos available on Coursera. While theoretical knowledge is all you learn in manual lectures, online learning procedures give you a briefing into practical procedures, and hence produce a better learning outcome.
To get certified in a course or know more about your subject, the first step is to register yourself on the official website- www.coursera.org. Next, check if the course you wish to pursue is listed on the website.
Once you enrol for a course, you can access the videos, lectures, take quizzes, and assess your peers. In case you’re unable to understand a particular topic, the website allows you to access randomized versions of the assignment, so you can re-study and take another attempt at the assignment.
The approximate time you are expected to spend on one course is eight to ten weeks, with one or two hours of video lectures per week. The duration of every course depends on the user, as more time spent on the videos, lectures or weekly exercises, would reduce the time taken for every assessment.
Coursera aims at empowering people through education to improve their lives and the lives of their families and peers. The best thing about the courses provided, is that your age, profession, qualification or industry are no constraints to enrol. Also, there is no penalty if you drop out of any course, for some reason.
We live in a competitive world where your qualifications and certifications matter a lot, to the job economy.
Supplementing your education with something that is recognized worldwide is an added advantage in that case, especially when it comes for free.
