When all looked merry for the Delhi Daredevils, Chennai Super Kings played the spoilsport as they ‘Yellow Brigade’ produced a clinical performance to crush the Delhi side by 93 runs and register their first win in an IPL encounter. CSK were jolted by the wickets of Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum but southpaw Suresh Raina who made a crafty 56 off 41 balls stabilised the innings. A late burst from skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni ensured that Chennai had a competitive total on board as they amassed 177 runs.
In reply, Delhi started badly in the run chase. It seems they were missing the services of skipper Kevin Pietersen as they lost half of their side with just 50 runs on the board.
Young Ishwar Pandey, who was mostly on the benches during India’s tour of New Zealand, impressed on his IPL debut. He struck the first blow for Chennai in only his second over by removing Mayank Agarwal. Delhi batsman, Murali Vijay (11) and Manoj Tiwary too did not hurt the scorers as they duo departed back in the hut. Current skipper Dinesh Karthik (21) and J P Duminy (15) tried to revive the Delhi innings but it was not to be as wickets continued to tumble like pack of cards.
Chennai’s bowlers were the stars as R Ashwin (2/3), R Jadeja (2/18) and I Pandey (2/23) shared six wickets between them. CSK have got off to a winning start and if the form continues, there might be no stopping the Dhoni brigade. As for the Delhi outfit, they must try to get Kevin Pietersen fit ASAP! And in the meanwhile, it’s back to the drawing board for Gary Kirsten and his weakened Delhi players.
