Then Brahma Ji asked him to make a wish and assured him to fulfil the same, he asked for the blessing of immortality, but Brahma said that each one who born will have to die someday, and told him to ask something else.

Then Mahishasura thought very carefully and said, ‘You bless me that none of the Gods, Devils and human beings can kill me. I die by the hand of a woman. Brahma Ji agreed and blessed him with the same. With this Mahishasur started thinking that he had become immortal. In this hypocrisy, he made terror in all the three worlds known as Triloka. He also attacked the Gods of IndraLok.

All Lords troubled by Mahishasura went to Brahma Ji, then everyone together formed the Goddess Durga. Every God and Goddess had given one of their traits to Goddess Durga, for example, Lord Shiva Trishul, Lord Vishnu chakra, Lord Vayu Arrow etc., therefore Goddess Durga has the power of all the Gods. Goddess Durga fought for nine days to overcome Mahishasura’s negativity. On a ninth day, the mother killed Mahishasur. Hence Navratri is celebrated for nine days.

Goddess Durga is also a symbol of affection and sweetness, but she is equally aggressive for the devils. Goddess Durga was originally meant to kill Mahishasur. He killed Mahishasur with his lions and arms. You must have seen this form of Goddess often in photos and idols and for this reason, he is also called Mahishasur Maardani.
