(Names of the couple have been changed)
When Anu joined a thriving ad company at Delhi’s posh Canaught Place area, she ONLY had success and fame on her mind. She never thought she would walk out of that place with a lover, much less a husband. But, as they say, stranger things have happened! Anu, the chirpy and passionate girl, joined as a copyrighter to make it BIG in the advertising world.
Her first few days at the new work place were rather uneventful as she hardly got any work and didn’t know anybody at work either. She was beginning to regret her decision of working here when her boss assigned her to another project. She didn’t expect much from this new project, but she was ready to give it her best shot. On the first day of her new job, her immediate senior walked up to her with a smile so devastating that Anu was practically melting at her spot.
‘You’re the new girl, I believe!’ He said. Anu nodded, all the while staring at him (rather foolishly). ‘Hi, welcome to my team! I am Ishan.’
‘Thanks, Ishan. I am…I am Anusha…Anu.’ She continued to stare for a good twenty more seconds. ‘Well, Anusha…I mean, Anu…allow me to introduce you to the rest of the team.’
As Anu got more and more immersed in her new project, she started spending more time with her senior who was friendly, charming and a cool-headed boss. She was sure that it was a school girl-esque crush on the cute senior so she didn’t read much into it. She was just clearing out her table after work one day when Ishan walked in.
‘Anu, I hear you stay alone?’
‘Uh…yeah, I do. I am new to the city’
‘Right…see, I need to ask you something very personal. Will you please hear me out before taking any decisions?’
‘Eh…ye…yeah…I mean, sure. Go ahead’
‘See, the thing is, I…I…I suffer from night terrors’
‘Oh’
‘No, really. These are violent bouts of terror attacks that happen in my head and make me do things. Things that I regret in the morning.’
‘What things, exactly?’
‘Slashing my wrist, for example. See, various things, you know!’
‘Hmm…what do you want me to do about it?’
‘I live alone too…I was wondering if you could…if you could spend the night with me. In a non-sexual way, of course. So that you can guard me if I sleep-walk and harm myself’
‘WHAT! You’re making this up, aren’t you?’
‘Unfortunately, no. You can Google the term or call up my shrink’
‘What about your friends…or…male colleagues?’
‘I don’t have any friends and male colleagues have a family to go back to…’
‘This service…I mean, this guarding thing can harm me?’
‘No, no, no…and I will pay you’
‘Hmmm. Draw up an agreement and we shall see about it’
She began to guard him from that night onwards. Yes, she was definitely worried about her safety. But she was excited and curious too. She liked this man and she felt sad that he was going through something as horrible as this (If he were telling the truth, that is). Their routine would be the same, day after day after day. She would go to his place around 9. They would eat a healthy dinner, squatting in front of the telly, tell each other about their likes and dislikes, read a book and then go off to sleep. Very professional and very blah. After a month of this strange arrangement, Anu cancelled on him.
“You’re not coming tonight? Are you okay?’
‘I am fine, Ishan. It’s just that I have to rush back home. My marriage has been fixed’
‘Wha? Oh…well, sure. I mean…congrats!’
‘Thanks…’
That was the last time the two spoke with each other. He never tried to get in touch with her and she never bothered to reach out to him. Until about three months, that is.
Ishan was just coming out of a crappy movie and cussing loudly, when he spotted Anu at the entrance. He walked up to her and forced a brilliant ‘Oh-my-god-you’re-married-now’ smile.
‘Well, well, well, if this isn’t the blushing bride!’
‘Hello to you too, Ishan’ ‘So, where is the husband? Don’t worry I will not bring up the night terror issues’. He chuckled.
‘There’s no husband’
‘Wha? You…you’re not married?’
‘No’
‘Erm…why?’
‘Because I am in love with you, you moron’
‘—-‘
‘How could I have married a stranger after spending so much time with you?’
‘Why didn’t you tell me before?’
‘Because I know you’re in love with a girl from work. I read your texts…after you fell…asleep’
‘Hmm…so you know her name too, I am sure!’
‘No. And I don’t care either…tell her about your feelings. Make her happy’
‘Hmm…okay…I love you’
‘Is this some joke?’
‘No, not to me. You’re the girl from work. How can it be someone else when I have spent so much time with you?’
‘Why didn’t you tell me before?’
‘You’re the one who wanted to get married to some godforsaken stranger…’
‘What now?’
‘We are the same, of course…only the guarding nights will be more sexual’. He smirked. ‘Relax, I am kidding. Let’s date and see where this goes, shall we?’
‘Yes, we shall!’ ‘You don’t really have any night terrors, do you?’
‘No. But it’s the best pick up line. EVER’
The two are planning a winter wedding this year. And his night terrors are about to begin! We wish the flamboyant couple a bumpy and joyous ride ahead.
