How To Protect Yourself From WannaCry Ransomware That Is Affecting Computers Globally !

WannaCry Ransomware

WannaCry Ransomware  – The worldwide cyber-attack last week has left computer users in a tizzy regarding the safety of their personal data.

The virtual world came to a screeching halt when the WannaCry Ransomware took over the likes of FedEx, Renault, Andhra Police, and the Russian Interior Ministry amongst many others! The effects of this massive attack on cyber security have left many wondering about how safe they really are from unwarranted hackers!

Ransomware has been a major threat over the years, with hackers taking over entire systems and demanding ransom, usually in bitcoins, to retract the malware. The recent attack last week has forced the G7 countries to restructure their policies with regard to dealing with such malicious cyber-attacks.

While the authorities figure out a way to deal with hackers on the large scale, here are a few pointers to help keep your computers safe.

WannaCry Ransomware Protection-

1  –  Update your Windows software on a regular basis. For Windows XP users, you need to download and install the patch that Windows has made available. Windows 10 has an automatic update system. You can do this manually as well. This will ensure that your software stays secure from malicious attack.

2  –  Invest in an anti-virus program. While WannaCry used a bug in the Windows OS to spread cyber mayhem across the globe, malicious content can find its way to your computer via other important applications on your computer as well. While updated software patches your system, an updated anti-virus adds an extra layer of protection and screening.

3  –  Back up your data at all times. This is one lazy mistake that most people make. DO NOT SKIP BACKUP. Your data is crucial to you and you would not want it to be lost to a virus. Always keep a copy of your data with you so that you do not land in a pickle in the wake of a Ransomware attack! There are many cloud storage options available that you can use to back up your data.

4  –  Be careful with your mail. The most common form of a Ransomware attack is through the email. If you see a mail with a suspicious link or some unknown content, do not click on it. Simply delete the mail without opening it. Be smart and you won’t have to regret!

You would be surprised how these seemingly easy steps can keep your computer out of harm’s way! With a bit of conscious effort, you can avoid an attack like WannaCry Ransomware.
