All You Need To Know About The Hong Kong Protest

After the Arab Spring in the Middle East, and the Occupy Wall Street Movement in USA, it’s Hong Kong which is facing an #Umbrella Protest, better known as the Umbrella Revolution.

The Umbrella protest started in September 2014. The protest was started by the #Hong Kong Federation of Students and Scholarism on 22 September 2014 against the electoral reforms.

Hong Kong which was previously a British colony became a part of Peoples Republic of China in 1997. It has a special administrative system and political system which is different from the rest of China. The main reason behind the protest is that the people of Hong Kong are denied the right of selecting a leader of their own choice in the year 2017

All the #pro-democracy groups have threatened to occupy the Central financial district of the city where all the banks and business are present. People from all walks of life have gathered for the protest to support democracy and its importance. The crowd includes students, professors, religious leaders and many professionals.

Hong Kong is a city handed over to China by the British Colony in the year 1997. Its present population is around 7 million. China has applied few basic laws to the city, and it works under the formula of “One Country, Two Systems”.  Hong Kong has its own legal and financial systems. Also, it enjoys other civil liberties unlike mainland China like freedom of press, independent judiciary and most importantly right to protest.

There is a feeling of discontentment especially among the youth of Hong Kong for many problems.

Still there are many people who are against the protest. There is a group of Pro- Beijing people who do not support the protesters and they have their own rallies against the Occupy Central Protests.  According to an opinion poll, there are only 31% of people who have supported the civil disobedience movement.

It’s been more than a month since the protest has been taking place. As a result it has witnessed a lot of violence. The Hong Kong Government very much want the public to accept Beijing’s electoral reform deals so as to end the protest.
