In a major shame to the Gujarat government and chief minister Narendra Modi, encounter specialist officer, DG Vanzara, resigned from Indian Police Service (IPS) and accused his ‘God’ (Modi) and former state home minister Amit Shah of betraying all the jailed officers and playing games with them for his political interests, adding that the Gujarat government equally accountable for the encounters.
Vanzara is accused in four encounter cases — Sohrabbuddin, Tulsi Prajapati, Ishrat Jahan and Sadiq Jamal. His 10-page resignation letter called the actions of the 32 jailed officers in four alleged fake encounter cases as patriotic and part of the war on terror. He vindicated the encounters in national interest and at the same time keeping with the policies of the government.
Including Vanzara, there are as many as 32 police officers, who have been jailed for more than six-and-a-half years, but the trial has not yet started and yet they are not been granted bail.
Is the legal system or judiciary a menace in Gujarat or is the state government trying to find an escape route by keeping the cases in cold store?
Being rigorous on Amit Shah, who is now the BJP general secretary, Vanzara said he misguided Modi. In the letter, the jailed IPS officer wrote “I adored Narendra Modi as God because of my supreme faith in him but my God could not rise to the occasion under evil influence of Amit Shah.”
These developments came a day after the Congress demanded Modi’s resignation in the wake of a sting operation, which claimed to expose senior BJP leaders’ ploy to save Amit Shah in Tulsi Prajapati encounter case.
Tulsiram Prajapati was killed in an alleged staged shootout Dec 28, 2006 in which then minister of state for home Amit Shah is the main accused. Prajapati was the only witness to the December 2005 police shootout in which Sohrabuddin Sheikh was killed.
Even if the encounter orders were directed by the state government, I would like to ask Vanzara how can he justify fake encounters as patriotic and in national interest?
