Exactly two years ago, on October 4, 2012 to be specific, the people of Kashmir had witnessed the return of the prodigal son. The scion of Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, Rahul Gandhi, had worn a gray phiran and tried to sway the people by saying that he was a Kashmiri.
“I am a Kashmiri. I myself am from Kashmiri family and want to have lifelong relations with the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Rahul had said.
He had said something poetic like he “extends” his hand to Omar Abdullah like Jawaharlal Nehru extended his to Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah “for holistic and comprehensive development of Jammu and Kashmir”.
“I have two goals for Kashmir. First, I want to see permanent bond is established between us. I want to understand your problems deeply. I want to have lifelong relationship with you (people). I want that youth of this place should become part of India’s development and progress like other states of the country,” he had further added.
Well, good old times when he could have said anything and the UPA government may or may not have chosen to act on it. And we all know how much development UPA gave to Kashmir.
But far more amusing was the fact that this prodigal son of Kashmir was missing in action when his Kashmiri brethren were facing the worst flood of the decade. It was only after a month had passed devastating everything and water had started to recede that the Kashmiri brother Rahul decided to step out of the comfort of his house on September 29.
Maybe he was not aware of the hard work that the central government and army was doing and so he tried to suggest that the “Centre should provide relief package to flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir on the lines of Uttarakhand when the state was ravaged by the flash floods last year.” He was completely unaware of the fact that a package of Rs 1,000-crore was already announced by the Centre for Jammu and Kashmir to cope with the destruction, and we do not blame him for his ignorance. But Uttarakhand? Seriously? He must be aware of the scams and bad organization that his party carried out during the period!
Now, the Kashmir is in a dire state. Pakistan violating the ceasefire was nothing new during UPA rule. In fact, we should give some credit to the government for talking tough to Pakistan in later days of its rule. But we also know that the government was just inches away from giving some parts of Kashmir to Pakistan and Rahul’s mother, Congress president Sonia Gandhi was one of the main reasons behind it.
The Pakistani shelling has killed women and children on the border. People are fleeing their homes near LoC. The country is retaliating now and the Prime Minister is on the verge of waging war just resisting to tackle the situation in some other way.
But not a word has come from Rahul Gandhi – the person who was our second option for becoming the Prime Minister. Where are you the son of Kashmir?
