The Aam Aadmi Party is witnessing huge rise in its membership digits, especially after they created the magic in Delhi assembly elections. Now the party is set to launch itself at national level in 2014 general elections.
The people joining AAP’s bandwagon either had a bad tryst with politics or are seasoned politicians with bad records. Are they using AAP for their political gain?
Many of the people who have joined AAP recently, are not so ‘aam’ as other members of the party. They are big corporates who either want a shot at politics or have already tried doing so earlier but failed. Also, AAP based its campaign on all-politicians-are-thieves, but it now seems to be deflecting from its line of thought. It all is an altered proposition as it is admitting politicians to its ranks.
Last week, former Infosys director V Balakrishnan joined AAPfor the “revolution” that the party was bringing about. Talks of him fighting Nandan Nilekani, who will contest on a Congress ticket, from Bangalore are already doing rounds. Given that AAP has an edge over any party for its anti-corruption stand and anti-Congress stand, is Balakrishnan trying to settle an old score through AAP ticket?
Former Royal Bank of Scotland CEO Meera Sanyal has already burnt her feet in Lok Sabha elections. This time she has joined AAP for the leverage that the name and ideology attached to it may bring.
Adarsh Shastri, who is grandson of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was next to join. He left his over 1 crore salary figure at Apple Inc to join AAP and hopes to contest election too. Perhaps he thought it was the best time to launch himself into public service from the right platform which will ensure him name, fame and win too.
The newest entrant from corporate world is Captain GR Gopinath who started low cost air carriers in the country. He has already contested and lost in 2009 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from Bangalore South constituency.
Not only that, former Samajwadi Party leader Kamal Farooqui has joined AAP. He was with Congress before joining Samajwadi Party which won in Uttar Pradesh. Given AAP’s current status, it cannot be denied that Farooqui wants to gain from it.
BJP rebel from Gujarat Kanu Kalsaria has also joined AAP. He launched revolt against Narendra Modi and enjoys farmer’s respect. What a better place than AAP to challenge Narendra Modi and get away with it?
AAP is doing everything which is away from its party’s line and inducting people who are far from the ‘aam aadmi’ category. Till now it has maintained that all these people are honest and have a clean record. We just hope that AAP is not misused and saved from future embarrasments.
