At a time when Delhi assembly is amid constitutional crisis and the opposition Bhartiya Janata Party is working in sync with its arch enemy Congress on the issue of Lokpal Bill, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has again threatened to resign from his post. This will be his third resignation threat to both the parties within a week.
Getting to the root of the situation and decoding these threats revealed that they were as hollow as poll promises of the AAP government which has still not been able to deliver some substance due to his various antics. Here are five reasons which indicate towards the hollowness of his statement:
- Dispersion of the support base: Kejriwal is well aware that his resignation will disperse his support base. People are waiting for results not resignation.
- Feud in the party: The AAP is already battling with internal feud. The Somnath Bharti incident has created a greater rift in the party and Kejriwal’s resignation threats will only further alienate his supporters.
- Upcoming general elections: Kejriwal needs to do some work to revive his party’s image to get the same kind of vehement support in general elections that he received during Delhi assembly elections. If he does not do so, he will be considered an escapist.
- Stronger BJP: The BJP will take over the issue and exploit it to further consolidate its base. The soaring popularity of Narendra Modi, which is evident in many surveys and rallies conducted by BJP will suffocate AAP.
- Congress: The Congress party will finally get a strong point to counter AAP. It will get to say that AAP made a mockery of the government institutions and despite Congress support it failed to work.
