Early Diwali for Tamil Nadu was announced yesterday when the Supreme Court granted bail to AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case. Today, she is coming out of jail.
The Special Court in Bangalore on Saturday issued the order for her release from jail in accordance with the Supreme Court order.
The release order by Special Judge John Michael D’Cunha came after a bond for Rs 2 crore was furnished and surety of assets offered. Copy of the Supreme Court order was also produced before the court by Jayalalithaa’s lawyers.
Jayalalithaa’s close aide Sasikala and her relatives Sudhakaran and Elavarasi also fufilled similar conditions.

Reportedly, top leaders of the party, including present CM O Panneerselvam has turned up in Bangalore with a special convoy of cars to receive and take her to the airport.
Chennai had erupted in euphoric celebrations after the news of her release. Security was boosted across Bangalore yesterday. Times Now had reported that Section 144 was to remain imposed in the city prior to her release.
Amma’s supporters started gathering near the Bangalore Central Jail after the Supreme Court order. Due to this, the police made arrangements making sure that nobody comes within three kilometres of the jail.
The jail is located about 20 km from the Hosur point.
The 66-year-old veteran politician was denied bail by the High Court on October 7 despite the Special Public Prosecutor not objecting to grant of conditional bail to her.
She has been charged of amassing wealth during 1991-96 when she was the Chief Minister for the first time. Jayalalithaa maintains that she acquired property through legal means.
Reportedly, she also contended that the trial court had overlooked several judgments and not considered the binding nature of various income tax orders and decisions of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, which had accepted the income and the level of expenditure pleaded by her.
“There “are no grounds” to give bail to Jayalalithaa. Corruption amounts to “violation of human rights” and leads to economic imbalance,” the High Court judge had said in the last order.
The Special Court had held Jayalalithaa and three others guilty of corruption. The court had also slapped a fine of Rs 100 crores on the AIADMK chief and Rs 10 crores fine on each of the three other accused.
Yesterday, Jayalalithaa was given the relief after she assured the Supreme Court that she won’t take any adjournment in the Karnataka High Court and would file paper-book of her appeal within two months.
“We will not give you a day more if you fail to file paper-book within 2 months,” said the Supreme Court.
Jayalalithaa volunteered before the top court to be kept in confinement in house for 2-3 months while pressing for bail.
The court further asked Jayalalithaa to direct her party workers not to create law and order problem in the state.
