They must also realize that if they do not dare to see beyond Nehru-Gandhis now, they will never understand their own potential and will remain a part of the failure in the history of Congress.
When murmurs inside the Congress party transformed into voices of dissent after their bitter defeat in the Lok Sabha elections under the leadership of their dear Rahulji, it was looked upon as a good sign.
Some of the Congress allies broke away recently and will now pursue their political aspirations alone.
Some of them were on the verge of breaking away and some had already found a place in other parties, including the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party, even before the elections had commenced.
After the defeat, everyone had realized that the party vice-president Rahul Gandhi was perhaps a political misfit indeed under whose leadership the party lost all the elections – general and assembly – one by one.
They had started voicing their concerns.
After 67 years of independence, the country seemed to be coming out of the Congress’ shadow. The Indian janata too chose someone from non-Congress background to take over the reins of the country. It was almost like Gandhiji’s idea of disbanding Congress after its ore work was near realization. But the Congressmen perhaps do not wish to give up the mental slavery they have been doing for all these years.
But the members of Congress party on Thursday reiterated their old stand that they wanted the third in Nehru-Gandhi lineage to lead the party – Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra.
Stating that Congress workers always wanted “all members of the Gandhi family” to enter politics, party spokesperson Shobha Oza said, “Be it the demand for Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi earlier or now Priyanka, we want that all three of them should take up a leadership role in the party.”
Oza was responding to questions about a poster in Allahabad proclaiming that Priyanka would soon join active politics. The poster read, “Congress ka moon, Priyanka is coming soon.”
The Congress party has always favoured Priyanka over Rahul but the former was not given any official position in the party. However, Priyanka was always in loop. She has been attending party’s internal and crucial meetings meant only for the core Congress group.
Although the past record of Priyanka has been worse than Rahul, the party members continue to show faith in this blue moon of elections.
Reportedly, the party is, however, divided on the impact of Priyanka’s possible entry. Many feel it would mean admitting Rahul’s failure, while some are apprehensive about how the youth will see the entry of another Nehru-Gandhi family member.
Interestingly, this time, they do not wish Priyanka to lead the party alone or lead in place of Rahul, which is definitely a significant departure from their earlier stands. But they want all three Gandhis – Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka – to provide a collective leadership to the party.
Perhaps they are enthused by the fact that their Baba stormed the well of the parliament on the issue of communal clashes in Uttar Pradesh and said a word or two against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
Rather than being happy, they should teach their Baba some manners. And they must also realize that if they do not dare to see beyond Nehru-Gandhis now, they will never understand their own potential and will remain a part of the failure in the history of Congress.
