Daily soaps, reality shows, sports, game shows, news, movies etc etc etc!
All this and much more fills up your TV channel list in a bid to provide you entertainment, even if most fail to come near entertaining you in any manner.
However, in the past couple of years there have been some serious attempts to provide quality entertainment and one show, which has definitely succeeded not only in India, but also across the border is none other than Coke Studio @ MTV!
Yes, it is a music based show and no, it is totally unlike fictional or non-fictional shows which normally do wonders for producers and the channel. What started out as an experiment in 2011 has taken new wings and this year, which is the 4th season for the show, it is all set to entertain the loyal fans of music all year long! Yeah, you read that right! MTV brings you this marvellous piece of entertainment for an entire year which will have not only the traditional studio set-up, but also the videos of songs sung by hugely talented singers and composers from all across the country.
One must be tempted to point out that it is yet another music based show, but here is the difference. Bollywood has slowly, but surely killed all forms of alternate music so much so that traditional folk, the un-conventional music is dying out. The market for such music and artists who are the masters of their craft are finding it difficult to compete with the deep pockets of Hindi film music. Film music is definitely popular, but it fails to give space to diversity. It only makes and sells popular music instead of giving listeners some variety and deep music.
In such circumstances it is really a praiseworthy effort of groups like Coca Cola and MTV to join hands and give a platform to music which has been part of our history for centuries. To present such music to the youth of today in a form which appeals to them is a big deal considering that anything related to folk is looked down upon. Thanks to Coke Studio, people have started showing interest in soulful music.
Coming to the soul of this show, the immensely talented performers like Amit Trivedi, Pritam, Ram Sampat, Raftaar, Clinton Cerejo, Sachin-Jigar, Harshdeep Kaur, Rekha Bhardwaj, Jyoti Nooran, Vishal-Shekhar etc. will make their contributions. Trust these singers and music composers to come up with the music they believe in instead of catering to demands of stars or producers for individual projects.
Gear up for the soulful music coming to you March onwards and get ready to groove!
