We all need them!
We all use them!
And we all dirty them too!
But how many of us are careful about our toilet manners? How many of us make sure that we leave the toilet as we find it? (The cleaner ones I am talking about here). Do we keep the fact in mind while using them that it will be used by others as well, unless you are on your private island! If you expect a clean bathroom when you enter it, others deserve that too, right?
And hilariously so, some people who are the first to turn up their noses in dirty, smelly toilets are themselves to blame for breaches of good toilet etiquette. Is this because of their ignorance, indifference or upbringing?
Well, here are a few imperative bathroom etiquettes that we all need to practice, if for nothing else, for Modi’s Swatch Bhaarat Abhiyaan, at the least!
Etiquette 1 (Cleaning) –
Clean up your own mess. No one likes to clean someone else’s mess. If you are a man, pull the seat up before you use the commode for peeing! And place it down before leaving. If you comb your hair in the toilet, please do not leave hair on the counter or in the basin. Use the waste-bin effectively. Use proper sanitation measures for your hands before you leave toilet. Wash them thoroughly after your business, whatever small or big it maybe, in there.
Etiquette 2 (Being inside and the door manners) –
Do not take reading material into the office toilet or other public places toilets. Others might be waiting for their turn outside. Lock the cubicle (stall) door when you enter a public toilet. You may embarrass someone. Leave the public toilet door un-bolted when you leave, so to indicate that it is unoccupied. But at home, please close the toilet after you.
Etiquette 3 (At The Guys’ Urinal) –
Guys; choose a spot at the urinal farthest from someone already there, or at one end if you are the first. While at the urinal, never turn to look directly or sideways at anyone standing there. Especially, do not look in his direction any lower than his face.Stand close enough to the pan or urinal so you don’t dribble on the floor. Concentrate when you pee so you don’t wet the seat, walls or floor.
Etiquette 4 (Toilet Seat and Flush) –
Avoid messing the toilet seat. If you do, clean up after yourself properly. Always remember to flush the toilet after use. Do it twice or thrice if the need be.
Etiquette 5 (For Women Folks) –
Ladies’ handbags pick up lots of germs if taken into the toilet and placed on the toilet floor or handled by germ laden hands. Please, never place the same bag on dining tables or kitchen bench tops immediately after, if they have been taken to the toilet. Girls’ sanitary napkins should not be flushed down the toilet, but be wrapped and disposed of in the sanitary pad disposal unit.
Etiquette 6 (For Art Enthusiasts) –
Do not use your arty skills inside the toilet, there is no point showing your skills, there if you wouldn’t know who appreciated it. Rather, you would be called curses for it.
Etiquette 7 (Home Bathrooms) –
At home, always have a ready toilet roll and a spare handy. Consider the rest of the family and your guests. Knock first if the toilet or bathroom appears to be occupied. Use the exhaust fan so you don’t suffocate yourself or the next entrant. Your bathroom must be equipped with the necessary toiletries such as soap, paper napkins, toothpastes, face-wash and other stuff all the time. Check the stuff there in, before you handover the toilet to your guests. Babies disposable nappies must not be buried or left unattended in the corners. Put them in disposal bags and throw in bins.
Etiquette 8 (Most Important And For All) –
Bathroom word means, cleaning the body, so it becomes imperative that must have a clean place to do so. The way you expect, leave it the same way for others.
Hope this made some sense to you and you would remember to use these etiquettes next time you enter a public or home bathroom.
Have a fruitful toileting!
