If you have watched the rushes of Kofee With Karan’s upcoming episode with Anushka Sharma and Anurag Kashyap, you would know why we are suddenly talking about Botox today. The bubbly girl is seen struggling to smile to even open her mouth wide, thanks to her (alleged) surgery gone wrong. While Botox shots, known in the aesthetic world as the no-knife surgery, has been around for a long time now. The injection shots, which is administered to remove wrinkles, fine lines, refining the features and to make lips fuller, is the go-to tool of the wealthy and glamorous. But is this fascinating shot that miraculously removes fine lines worth the money and effort? Let’s find out:
What is Botox?
Botox is basically liquid neurotoxin that makes the fine lines disappear by making them less deep. This way, your skin looks young and lively even at the age of sixty! The effects of this treatment lasts anywhere between three and six months and once it wears off, the person can go for another round of shots. The neurotoxin itself is made from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. Despite being made from a deadly toxin, the side-effects are far less alarming…how? Because the toxin is used in limited measures and injected only in the specific area and doesn’t spread to the rest of the face. This way, the after-effects of the products are minimized.
The Frozen Maiden look!
The reason the shots require no surgery at all is because it temporarily paralyses the area. This paralysis is what gives your features the ‘Frozen Maiden’ look. If you see actresses who are unable to smile widely (Preity Zinta on her chat show, for example) or their jaws look immobile (Kareena Kapoor Khan, ahem ahem), then you know why! While Botox shots are loved by Bollywood and Hollywood celebs and Page 3 regulars, commoners with the dough to spend are also experimenting with it. With the easy availability of these jabs, it’s become the staple cosmetic tool of men and women trying to hide their age (and wrinkles).
The good and the bad of it
Those who are pro-Botox will say that with people using it for over 30 years, no major harm has happened to anybody. But those who are against it argue that poison in any form is ultimately harmful to the person. Even though the results are instantaneous, the side-effects have a long term effect. You can have frequent headaches, feel a pricking sensation at times, droopy eyelids, frozen and expressionless look, allergic reaction to the toxin present in the injection or even slight nausea and fever. The good side of it is of course the disappearance of lines and a younger looking skin. In fact, most actresses get a shot just before a plum advertisement offer or a shoot so that they can look stunning!
Why it’s not worth it
All the recent studies have only talked about its effect in the short term so nobody knows how harmful it can be in the long run. It can not only make you look crazy due to the frozen look, but prone to other infections and allergies. In fact, once the Botox wears off, you’ll start to look older than you are and your fine lines will be more deep and prominent. That’s why the treatments never stop and you have to keep getting the shots in order to look youthful and flawless.
While occasional shots are okay, doing this regularly can seriously harm your face. It will make you worse than you actually are. And if you must get a shot, go to a doctor who has experience and not any shady clinic!
