Indian TV is in desperate need for some revamp and what better than American sitcoms that have always found favours with our youth, right? We drum up a list of five American shows that must be remade into Hindi.
#1 Sherlock:
The crime show, which is based on Arthur Conon Doyle’s classic of the same name, has been a hit with the audiences for a long time now. The show has its loyalist not just in the states, but also here. So why not borrow the basic premise of the show and convert for the Indian audiences? We might have had a Karamchan and currently CID, but they are like holding candle to the sun when compared to this fast-paced thriller. I am sure that we can have our own Benedict Cumerbach if we look a little hard. Wouldn’t you want to watch this show in Hindi?
#2 Castle:
Another crime-solving show, this one sees a popular author shadowing a detective as she solves crimes in the city of New York. It has its own twist and turns with many back stories and is peppered with wit, drama and the crackling chemistry of the lead pair. It would be fun to watch this show in Hindi with the protagonists dealing with Indian stories and crimes. The show has been so well received by the audiences that it’s currently in its sixth edition and is doing a damn well job of it. We do have real life crimes adapted for the screen, but they are not as exciting and entertaining as this show.
#3 Supernatural:
We do have plenty of horror shows that border on craziness. But this story of two ghost hunting brothers will make for a refreshing change. We can adapt the screenplay to weave it in with superstious stories from our regions and make a compelling and intriguing thriller. Let’s face it, who doesn’t like to watch supernatural stories with a twist? More importantly, the Indian audiences need to be fed something intelligent than ‘Shhh…Koi Hai’ and the like. We are past the age where we would get scared by a masked killer or Aahat-esque plot, we want crisp dramas that get concluded in the same episode itself. No more ‘1000 episode’ runners for us!
#4 Switched At Birth:
It’s an interesting story of two teenagers who were mistakenly switched at birth and had to spend their growing up years with strangers. When the two meet, they realise how much they can relate with the other’s parents (and their biological ones). It will be perfect for our society that thrives on melodrama and dramatic serials. The show also deals with deaf and mute people and most of the scenes use the American Sign Language, apart from dealing with everyday teen problems. We should have a similar show dealing with Indian teenagers and their basic issues too!
#5 Friends:
How can we forget this classic when drawing up such a list! Now that Channel V and MTV have gone with serial route, they should have a show based on the popular 90s sitcom that made suoerstars out of the star cast. From emotional drama to legendary one liners, the show remains one the of the iconic sitcoms of American television as it completed a decade of excellent run and popularity. Even the reruns are lapped up Friends maniac, yours truly included! We hope we have such amazing characters and a great plot that will recreate the magic of the six friends!
