New year has already become good for people in Delhi. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet finally cleared a 50 per cent cut in electricity prices.
After meeting CAG over the issue, Kejriwal held a cabinet meeting at the Delhi Secretariat late in the evening on Tuesday for the same. Soon after announcing that the three major power distribution companies in the capital will be audited starting Wednesday, he announced that the families consuming upto 400 units of electricity will avail 50 percent cut in power tariff.
“If the companies have any objections about being audited, they should inform us by tomorrow morning,” Kejriwal said.
Kejriwal missed his office for two consecustive days – on Monday and Tuesday – due to high fever and diarrhea. He was advised complete bed rest by his doctor for two days but he went to secretariat in the evening.
With this announcement, Kejriwal has delivered on two of his major poll promises to Delhi people, one being free water upto 667 lts to each household.
AAP has alleged that power companies in Delhi colluded with earlier governments to over-charge residents. Discounting the prices will require a massive government subsidy. According to some estimates, that could add up to Rs. 5,000 crores if the price is halved for 40 lakh consumers.
