The founder of banned terror group Indian Mujahideen and one of India’s most-wanted men, Yasin Bhatkal, has been arrested near the border with Nepal on Thursday.
As reported by NDTV, the government is yet to confirm the arrest, which is being described a breakthrough for Indian agencies.
Bhatkal was reportedly caught near Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, in a joint operation of the Delhi and Karnataka police. Intelligence and law enforcement agencies will now decide where to keep Bhatkal.
Bhatkal is the main suspect in the German Bakery blast in Pune in 2010, which killed 17 people. He was reportedly seen on CCTV footage of the bakery, wearing a cap to cover his face. He is also the main accused in the blast outside a stadium in Bangalore in 2010 during a cricket match.
According to intelligence agencies, the Indian Mujahideen is sponsored and patronized by Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Taiba. the group is responsible for a long list of terror attacks in recent years in cities including Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Bhatkal, aged 30, belongs to Karnataka. He co-founded the Mujahideen in 2008 with brother Riaz and Abdul Subhan Qureshi. Read more…
