Union health minister Dr Harshvardhan was first to be informed by the doctors at AIIMS trauma centre after Gopinath Munde met with a fatal accident on Tuesday morning. He lost a friend and a colleague and was visibly distraught by this loss.
In the capacity of being a doctor, Harshvardhan analysed the post mortem report of the late Maharashtra leader which said that Munde died of multiple internal injuries. He has come to the conclusion that Munde would have been alive had he worn the rear seat-belt.
“Wearing seat belt could have saved Munde. I lost my friend to a misconception. Most people think that the back-seat belts serve only a decorative purpose. In fact wearing them is as necessary as wearing front seat belts. They can save lives in the event of impacts,” he said before leaving for Beed, Maharashtra to attend the funeral of the deceased union minister.
Munde had died within seconds after his car was hit by another one from the side. The leader aready had stiffness in his neck due to an earlier injury. Because of the impact, he had fell from his seat and the throw-forward within the confined space of the car had damaged the atlanto axial joint in his neck severely injuring the spinal cord.
This had resulted in the disruption in the supply of blood to the brain causing brain damage and cardiac arrest. Besides, his liver was also ruptured and the internal bleeding led to the more complications.
All this could have been averted had Munde been wearing the rear seat-belt.
Keeping this particular reason in mind, the health minister has announced a major campaign to spread awareness on observing safety measures while driving.
As reported in the media, the union health ministry would soon take the initiative to expose the people to safety protocols while driving. A multi-media campaign in collaboration with NGOs working on safety is being considered in this regard.
“The focus would be the child victims of accidents whether direct or as those left behind by their parents,” Harshvardhan revealed.
“Let us regard the Gopinath Munde tragedy as the turning point. The minister’s tragic and untimely death should be a wake up call to all vehicle owners,” he stated.
Indeed, Munde’s death should give a lesson to the vehicle owners who do not think that it is important to wear seat belt or wait at a red light.
