It had the usual mother-in-law, daughter-in-law conflict, the usual based-in-Mumbai setup, the natural concept of a biased Indian mother, the concept of a dominating Indian wife, and yet, it was our favourite.
It’s been more than nine years since the show launched, and yet we long to watch the show which was presented to us way better than Taarak Mehta or Comedy Nights with Kapil. We talk about five reasons why we want another season of this sitcom. Read on…
1. A different level of Saas-Bahu saga:
While Indian television has never failed to present the melodramatic saas-bahu saga, this mother in law we are talking about has one thing different from others- class. Her character of a high class, sophisticated Indian mother-in-law did not only provide a break from the normal sagas, but also made us believe in something other than the stereotype in-laws potrayed in other TV soaps. Maya Sarabhai, was no doubt, the charm, and the life of the show.
2. A biased poet:
Say “Moma” and you get an image of a white faced person, who used to chant his mother’s name irrespective of the situation he was in. And why not. The “Moma” knew of his awful poetry, but unlike his other family members, never really discouraged him for it. Rosesh Sarabhai, turned out to be epic, when it came to poetry and supporting his mother in all the good and bad doings.
3. The side characters weren’t sidey:
The only show wherein, the side characters did not disappear right after a particular episode, which generally happens in any other Indian TV soap, was Sarabhai. Didn’t we all just love to watch Madhusudan Fufa torture the family members, especially Indravadhan, with the patented ‘Hain’? And the tech freak son-in-law who had nothing to do with others getting frustrated and bored of his techie talks.
4. The best father in law:
Why did I use best here? You’ll know if you’ve watched the show. Indravadhan Sarabhai, is the best example of a father-in-law, every girl wishes for. The only character on the show who had the guts to oppose what Maya Sarabhai ever said, siding with his daughter-in-law, mostly. Loved irritating his younger son, Rosesh, and that pacified the hearts of all viewers, did it not?
5. The behind-the-screen beats:
A script is never complete without proper music, dialogues, apt setup and things behind the screen. What people loved about this show was that it brought the mannerisms prevalent in the practical society, unlike others who brought it hypothetically.
It’s been almost nine years since the show launched, and yet we long to watch more of shows like this. Striking the hearts of Indian viewers, much before the concept of Guthhi and Palak ruled the Indian television.
