Sony released The Interview yesterday on YouTube and other platforms, which resulted in it becoming popular with torrents. The downloads now available worldwide.
Hopefully, all the controversy surrounding “The Interview” will come to an end with the film’s release on YouTube yesterday (only in the US), thanks to a deal between Sony Pictures and the video sharing mogul.
The interested audiences can also rent ($6) or buy ($15) the movie on Google Play, Xbox Live; they can also watch The Interview on a special website seetheinterview.com, which is being set up by Sony.
That being said, what you should know is that the movie is not as good as Seth Rogen’s other films. Rotten Tomatoes rates The Interview 53% out of 100.
However, the film is a hit on Torrent websites.
Though Sony Pictures had initially cancelled the movie’s release in all theatres in the US, it did telecast The Interview on YouTube yesterday. To the rest of the world, it left no other choice but to get pirated copies.
TorrentFreak, a website that covers reports about privacy, copyright and everything related, reports that the movie has been downloaded over 200,000 times. No one clearly anticipated this to happen, but the download is certain to hit Sony’s revenue for the movie adversely.
Those who subscribed to the $5.99 package to watch The Interview could even copy and share the URL link with the non-subscribers. Moreover, anyone that had access to the link was able to save the released copy on their desktop without paying a single dime.
The Interview focuses on the lead characters Dave Skylark and Aaron Rapoport, played by James Franco and Seth Rogen, respectively. The two land an interview with one of their biggest fans, Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator. When the CIA learns about the same, they recruit Skylark and Rapoport to assassinate Jong-un.
Initially, the movie was heavily condemned by North Korea for its plot, who also threatened the United States with grave consequences if the movie released.
This was further followed by the Sony hacking scandal, after which Sony Pictures decided to shelve the movie’s release altogether. This decision was met with heavy criticism from the Hollywood film fraternity; even the United States President Barack Obama spoke about Sony giving in to terrorism.
Though the movie is available on torrents, making it accessible for the world to download, the makers of the film would not see the hack and other controversies surrounding it as a total defeat.
