Experienced that feeling when you realise that there has been a dip in the temperature? Winter brings in crisp breeze, cold and allergies. But there’s always a way to cope with the chill.
While struggling to leave your cozy blankets in the morning, you might end up sneezing, sniffling, might have acquired a blocked nose, have a congested chest or probably something that’d make you realise the way it’s going to be all winter. The best way you can fight these winter illnesses is to address them from the root.
Swelled tonsils, cough and cold could be a result of the toxins accumulated in the body. While you can’t keep your hands off those garma garam pooris and mooli ke paranthes in the cold, it might surprise you that heavy/deep fried foods can lead to chest congestion. The best way to keep yourself away from these winter illnesses is by eating a proper and healthy diet.
WHY:
Our immune system is directly affected by what we eat, drink and breathe. The poorer the diet, the greater will be the amount of toxins concentrated in our body, making us more susceptible to infections and allergies.
Our body is designed to process, metabolize and clear toxins naturally. The over-the-permissible-level toxins affect the body’s natural cleansing pathways. Messing up with the body’s internal clock results in inflammation, congested chest or cough. So think before you gorge on lots’n lots of makkhan or poori bhaji.
PREVENTION:
Here are a few ‘Daadi maa ke nuskhe‘ you could use to keep toxins at bay and hence stay warm during winters…
– Turmeric: Better known as ‘haldi’, this is an all time available herb for fighting inflammation and allergies as it is a natural antibiotic and immunity booster. Make it a part of you winter meal daily by adding the powdered form in soup or having that haldi wala doodh you’ve heard of.
– Ginger: The knobbly root popularly known as ‘adrak’ clears the microcirculatory channels of the body, including the pesky sinuses that tend to flare up from time to time, when you catch cold. So, the next time you feel airsick or nauseous chew on some ginger tossed in honey. Can’t stop the toot-a-thon or gas- Oopsie! guess what? Ginger helps reduce flatulence!
– Dark Chocolate: Though this is not really a ‘daadi maa ka nuskha‘, but you won’t gain weight on consuming two ounces of dark chocolate on a regular basis. On the contrary, you will be rid of dry cough as a dose of dark chocolate will deliver the same result as your typical dose of cough medicine(without making you feel drowsy ofcourse)!
– Fermented foods: Beat the cold season by consuming more fermented foods such as yogurt, kimchi(Korean cabbage), kefir (a fermented milk drink). When fermented they contain beneficial bacteria, also known as probiotics, which can help keep your immune system strong.
