Today marks the 12th anniversary of the gruesome series of attacks that rocked the United States of America. With over 6000 killed and many more injured, it’s one of worst terror attacks the world has ever seen. Known as September 11 attacks or simply as 9/11, these attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda, an Islamic terrorist outfit, in New York City ,Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The attacks gained global coverage and sympathy as four passenger airliners were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Centre (both North and South towers) and the Pentagon in suicide attacks.
As the world tries to come terms with this cruel attack that led to the worldwide hunt and eventual capture of Osama Bin Laden, we give you a brief timeline of the attacks. Take a look:
7:59 am: American Airlines Flight 11, with 81 passengers and 11 crew members, takes off from Logan International Airport (Boston) towards Los Angeles International Airport (Los Angeles, California)
8:14: The flight is hijacked by hijackers Waleed and Wail al-Shehri , who take controls of the plane.
8:14: United Airlines Flight 175, with 56 passengers and 9 crew members, also takes off from Logan International Airport (Boston) for Los Angeles International Airport.
8:20: American Airlines Flight 77, with 58 passengers and 6 crew members, takes off from Washington Dulles International Airport (Virginia), also for Los Angeles International Airport.
8:46: Flight 11 crashes at into the north face of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
9:03: Flight 175 crashes into the south face of the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
9:37: Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon.
9:58: The South Tower collapses, causing massive destruction.
10:28: The North Tower of collapses, wrecking havoc everywhere.
