The news of Lionel Messi making his ‘long’ return from a hamstring injury to the Barcelona squad when they host Getafe in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday must have been somewhat of a ‘good news’. The Argentine player did not touch the ball since tearing his hamstring in Barca’s 4-1 win over Real Betis on November 10. After beginning his treatment for the injury in Barcelona, Messi then returned to his native Argentina to continue his recovery process during December. Now, the ‘superstar’ returns to take his side ahead.
Even though, Barca were doing ‘ok’ without Messi, manager Martino must heaving a sigh of relief with the former’s return to the team. Speaking to the press, the Barca manager was relieved to see Messi back in the team. He said, “I have spoken with him and he is in the squad. We are happy for him and I am especially happy to have all the players available. There was a lot of pressure for him to play against Elche, that would have been the normal thing to do. However, the difference now is that he has had more training sessions with the team. Tomorrow we will see if he plays from the start or not.”
In the La Liga, the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are on the trail of Barcelona. Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Costa are cementing their names on the top-scorer’s sheet but with Messi’ return, that could change rapidly, or can it? The Champions League also presents a favorable tie with high-flying Manchester City and Messi’s services will be required if Barca are to topple the Citizens.
Just having him back gives Barcelona a slight edge over their contemporaries and Messi can welcome himself with a goal, most probably a hattrick!
