On Tuesday, the spotlight was on England forward Wayne Rooney who was picked by David Moyes, managing in his first ever UEFA Champions League as Manchester United manager. Wayne delivered what he had to as the Red Devils went on to win 4-2 over German team, Bayer Leverkusen and the England star went onto score his 200th goal for the team. Later, in the post match programme, David Moyes praised his star adding, “I said several months ago Wayne Rooney could join the real greats with his goal-scoring. He could have got a hat-trick tonight.”
This year it seems the focus has shifted entirely from van Persie to Wayne Rooney himself. It all started on March 5, 2013 when Rooney was dropped by then Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as the Red Devils took on Real Madrid in the last eight of the Champions League at Old Trafford. United went on to lose the tie 2-1 and Nani, who replaced Rooney in the side, was sent off. On May 12, 2013, in Ferguson’s last home game, he revealed Rooney’s omission as the latter asked for a transfer request, which did not go down well with the player.
Rumours doing the round are that all is not well between Sir Alex and Rooney. And many ex-stars and club fans believed that ‘Roo’ would definetly leave the club that made him a star. The likes of Chelsea and Arsenal made their ‘calls’ but all went in vain as Wayne stayed put. That showed in his interview on Tuesday when he was asked about his ‘protracted transfer’ which angered the 27-year old.
And now, since calling it a day from the managerial post of Manchester United after 26 years at the helm, Sir Alex praised the former Everton man. Sir Alex’s comments showed that the new director at the club wanted ‘peace’ with his former player. He told MUTV, “Wayne’s performance was fantastic. I was pleased to see that, he’s got his energy back and his determination to attack players. It was all very encouraging for me. Being a director I am delighted to see that. He’s back to what we always remember him as. We will have a fantastic chance because in Van Persie and Rooney, you have forwards who can win you games.”
Where Rooney was seething of fowl calls made on him during Fergie’s reign, here, the most decorated and successful manager in English football had made it clear that – Rooney is still a ‘RED DEVIL!
