The Indian Super League has kicked-off amidst all the fanfare and glitz of the celebrity owners.
The fans in India are excited to see some big names of world football on the ‘desi’ pitches alongside some Indian players who would look to progress.
The ISL sees eight city-based clubs, each with a quota of seven foreigners plus a marquee player and are competing in the inaugural edition of the ISL.
The Owners of ISL – Reliance-IMG are so positive about the grand tourney that they want the national squad on the FIFA chart as well as make the cut at the FIFA World Cup. But even if as the future looks bright, with some good additions, the ISL can be more superior if some ‘top marquee’ players came along.
Here are these 5 names who we think could lighten up the ISL, and rake in some high ‘TRPs’ for the tournament:
Thierry Henry
The English Premier legend is on the verge of leaving the MLS (Major League Soccer) as the former’s contract expires with the New York Red Bulls. Reports in Europe suggest that Henry might end his career in France with big-wigs, PSG and Monaco linked with the former Arsenal man. But with his ‘Gunners’ friends, Freddie Ljunberg and Robert Pires sweating it out on the Indian pitches, Henry you can too!
Giorgos Karagounis
The Greece skipper was last seen in the English Premier League with Fulham Football club but the London club released the Greek international. The 37-year old is now a free agent and with no work at hand, trying some football on the Indian shores can be great for the former Euro Championship winner. For company, fellow national player Kostas Katsouranis is there as well!
Diego Forlan
35-year old Diego Forlan can be another great addition to the ISL with a wealth of experience and footballing ‘brain’. Former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid forward, is now plying trade with a Japanese club, Cerezo Osaka and the former can be attracted to the ISL, the crowd can expect some magical goals and bagful of tricks.
Diego Lugano
Another Uruguayan who could sparkle up the ISL is Diego Lugano. The 33-year old is a free agent at the moment after 12 appearances with EPL side, West Bromwich Albion. Lugano recently represented his country at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The likes of Mumbai City FC and FC Goa could go for Lugano if the latter decides to ply on the Indian shores.
Alan Smith
English Premier League is one of the mostly watched leagues in India and every Manchester United fan will know about Alan Smith. The former Red Devil is currently playing in the lower leagues of English football but an opportunity with the ISL could add to the star value in the league.
