But let’s face it, Liverpool deserve to win the league. Jose Mourinho’s 77-match unbeaten home run as Chelsea boss came to an abrupt end when bottom-placed Sunderland clinched an elusive victory at the Bridge. By this virtue, Liverpool could go five points ahead of Chelsea, ahead of their showdown clash at Anfield next week.
Chelsea clearly missed the services of their Belgian playmaker Eden Hazard who is out with an injury. Their forward men struggled to upstage the Sunderland goalkeeper and lacked penetration in the opposition half. On the other hand, a win at Chelsea has handed a morale boost to Sunderland who are now 29 points and with a game in hand in a bid to survive the relegation fight.
In a precarious way, Jose Mourinho didn’t seem pleased with the officials. In his post match press conference, the Portuguese attacked the officials. He said, “”I’m so sorry about it, but in quick four points I can say everything I want to say. “The first point is to congratulate my players they did everything they could, they fought, they played from the first to the last second. I think they deserve that, sometimes we praise the players when we won. I think it is fair to praise my players after a defeat. Secondly, congratulations to Sunderland. It doesn’t matter how or why, or in which way they won, but they won. They won the three points and three fantastic points for them.
“Third point, I want to congratulate (referee) Mike Dean. I think his performance was unbelievable and I think when referees have an unbelievable performance I think it is fair that managers credit them. He came here with one objective, the objective of a fantastic performance and he did that. Fourth, I think it is fair to congratulate (referees’ chief) Mike Riley because he is the referees’ boss and what they are doing all season is fantastic.”
A rather bemused Mourinho seems to have given up on the title hopes as far as the EPL is concerned taking in mind that Liverpool are in the driving seat. The Reds take on struggling Norwich City on Sunday, knowing that a win there could catapault them to the top of the pile. Luis Suarez and his pal Daniel Sturridge will be hungrier than ever to pile on more misery on the Canaries.
Even though Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has played down the buzz surrounding the Title aspirations of Liverpool, it seems the dream is on for the fans of the Red side of Merseyside. As they say, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’ Indeed, Liverpool aren’t at this point.
