With Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo still waiting in the wings for his Group match, it’s about time for his arch-rival Lionel Messi to showcase his talent on the bigger stage.
As Argentina gear up for a group tie encounter against Bosnia and Herzegovina, all eyes will be on that superstar from Barcelona, as he looks on to finally deliver at the World Cup.
The Barcelona forward will be his team’s star man as the Argentine’s will be relying on him to deliver the goods with many tipping him to lead Argentina to World Cup success in the same way Diego Maradona did in Mexico 28 years ago. Even though coach Alejandro Sabella has left out Juventus striker Carlos Tevez on controversial terms, the Argentina team still boasts an array of attacking talent. Enter – Sergio Aguero, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Angel Di Maria who could leave any top order defence looking ordinary.
But leaving them aside, Lionel Messi could be the top marksman for Argentina in this important encounter. Often critics have been bullish about Lionel Messi’s performance in international colours but the latter could prove them wrong on Sunday night.
On the other hand, opponents Bosnia go into this tie without any pressure. The European side can be counted as ‘underdogs’ against one of the favourites for the World Cup title and the dare of finding a way to stop Messi will be a tough one. Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko will look to outscore his club team-mate (Aguero). The striker scored 10 goals during the qualifying stages and could look add a bit more during the group games. Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic will be one to watch out for in the Bosnian midfield whereas Stoke City stopper Asmir Begovic will have a tough evening in front of the goal.
