Groups E and F turned out to be a goal fest as Lionel Messi yet again scored a winner to help Argentina progress to the Round of 16. The Swiss, France and Nigeria too advanced from their respective groups as we review the games that were eye-catching to say the least:
Group F
Argentina vs. Nigeria
Result – Argentina wins 3-2
The Argentines beat Nigeria 3-2 in their last World Cup group match thanks to a brace from star player Lionel Messi but Nigerian Ahmed Musa kept them in the game with two goals itself before Argentina left-back Marcos Rojo clinched in the winner. With the result, Argentina won Group F while Nigeria also advanced despite the loss, becoming the first African team in the round of 16 in Brazil.
Bosnia-Herzegovina vs. Iran
Result – Bosnia win 3-1
Bosnia-Herzegovina ended Iran’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stages and registered their first World Cup win in the process with a 3-1 victory in Group F.
Group E
France vs. Ecuador
Result – Draw
France drew 0-0 with 10-man Ecuador to advance to the second round of the World Cup on Wednesday, while the South Americans will be going home from the tournament. Thus, France emerged as winners of Group F despite sharing the spoils.
Honduras vs. Switzerland
Result – Swiss win 3-0
Bayern Munich star Xherdan Shaqiri scored all three goals on Wednesday to put Switzerland into the second round of the World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Honduras. The Swiss will next face Lionel Messi and Argentina on Tuesday in Sao Paulo. The result meant Ecuador was eliminated and the Swiss progressed despite their failings against France.
Group E and F have been tantalizing to watch with the right amount of entertainment provided by none other than the star himself – Lionel Messi. Besides that, France too has been brilliant in their respective group and expect them to be a tough nut to crack!
