Brazil vs. Chile
Result – Brazil win in penalties
Brazil advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday with a 3-2 shootout win over Chile following an intense and dramatic match that ended 1-1 after extra time. Neymar, David Luiz and Marcelo scored in the shootout, and Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar saved two penalties before watching Gonzalo Jara’s final attempt hit the post. Earlier in the game, David Luiz had given hosts the lead through a corner but Chile struck back with a goal from Barcelona star, Alexis Sanchez. Brazil has reached the quarterfinals of each World Cup since Argentina eliminated it in the second round in 1990.
Colombia vs. Uruguay
Result – Colombia win 2-0
Monaco star James Rodriguez scored twice to put Colombia into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in a 2-0 victory over Uruguay. Rodriguez gave his team the lead with a stunning long-range volley on the turn and added the second from close range shortly after the break as Colombia dominated a Uruguay side that sorely missed their banned striker. Rodriguez now has a tournament-leading five goals in Brazil and further enhanced his status as perhaps the tournament’s biggest revelation. Uruguay, meanwhile, struggled badly in attack without their talismanic striker Luis Suarez and his replacement Diego Forlan was substituted in the 53rd after a disappointing performance in what was probably his final World Cup appearance.
On the flip-side, Colombia will meet Brazil in a mouth-watering quarter-final clash which could be an enticing tie to watch out!
