Two of the worst defences in the English Premier League, Arsenal and Manchester United were once termed the ‘battle royale’ are now fighting to climb up the table in this year. Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal will meet for the very first time on as the Red Devils look to bring upon more misery to the Emirates.
Ever since the Ferguson era has departed, the current crop of players has not shown full potential. Post David Moyes, this side under Van Gaal have just four wins from their opening 11 games of the campaign and are seventh, one point behind Arsenal. But a shaky Arsenal side could be the right opposition for Manchester United to get back in top gear.
“It’s the first time I’ve sat on the bench against Arsenal as Manchester United coach, but I’ve played once against Arsenal with Barcelona,” the veteran Dutch manager said. “Wenger was on the bench and was already eight years into the job with Arsenal. I admire the way they play because it’s attacking and you play for the fans. I think that’s nice.”
A throwback into the sides’ recent meetings might suggest that the side from Old Trafford have the upper hand. The Red Devils have lost just one of their last 14 against Wenger’s side, outscoring them 26-9 during that run. Former Gunner Robin van Persie has three goals in his first three appearances for United against his former club and would be looking to add a couple more against his ex-club.
Another player from Arsenal who will be looking to score against his boyhood club will be Danny Welbeck who was instrumental for England during the international break. Although the Englishman has picked up hamstring knock but will face competition for his place from Olivier Giroud after the latter returned to full training this week. Star forward Alexis Sanchez has also returned late from Chile duty and might suffer fatigue factor.
Manchester United’s lengthy injury problems continued despite the international break, further with summer recruit Daley Blind’s out with a knee injury whereas Michael Carrick is doubtful for this game after dropping out of England duty due to a groin problem. Star summer signings Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao also face late fitness tests, while a host of defenders are on the treatment table.
Pundits and fans are predicting goals galore for this tie with both sides known to play some attractive football. With the prediction hat on, a 3-3 scoreline can be on the cards.
