The last time Baba Ramdev was in the news, it was for declining a Padma award.
This time around, though he is not the centre of attraction, one of his products is and for all the wrong reasons.
You can say How To Have A Baby Boy with his product Divya Putrajeevak Seeds?
Patanjali Yogpeeth, Baba Ramdev’s trust, has come up with a medicine named ‘Divya Putrajeevak Seed’ which guarantees the birth of a baby boy.
In a country that is no stranger to female foeticide, is this seriously what we need now?
The entire irony of conformist mother-in-laws forcing their daughter-in-laws to abort female child is already a topic of discussion in India. Do we really need ‘Divya Putrajeevak Beej’ that enables women to give birth to sons?
Imagine the audacity of manufacturing one such product in an already struggling country where respect for females is not achieved until they ask for it.
Now this is how biology works when it comes to reproduction in humans. You have the XX sex chromosomes in women and XY in men. One sex chromosome from each combines to form a child. Basically, women can give only ‘X’ chromosome; so, the gender of the child is decided upon which chromosome the guy donates – ‘X’ or ‘Y’. If he donates ‘X’, the child is a girl, but if he gives ‘Y’ during intercourse then it’s a boy.
So, so what exactly does ‘Divya Putrajeevak Beej’ do? Does it make the X chromosome that come from men expendable, in the process facilitating the birth of a boy? If that is the case, shouldn’t this product be made unavailable in India?
On the Internet, you can come across websites selling this product. Though they do not elaborate on the possibility of helping women produce a male offspring, the term ‘Putrajeevak’ gives a clear idea of the product’s focal point.
In fact, one of its websites online makes the following claim, “According to Ayurveda, this herb helps in achieving a baby boy but this is a matter of research. But people in India say that it is very effective in getting a baby boy”.
If Baba Ramdev promotes male supremacy and female subordination, he has a lot of questions to answer.
