‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Barred From Release In Malaysia

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, the movie adaptation of erotic novel by the same name by El James is set for wide release on the 13^th of February.

The book, when released in the UK, set a record as the fastest-selling paperback of all time.

When it was announced that the book would be converted into a movie, it sent the media into frenzy, for obvious reasons. The book is famous for explicitly depicting all erotic scenes. Where some readers have commended the book for bold involvement of practices such as BDSM, dominance/submission and bondage/discipline, a major portion of the audience has condemned their usage.

The film starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan was bound to run into controversy, since it revolves around the same plot as in the book and contains explicit scenes.

Speaking of controversies, the film has been banned in Malaysia. Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid, the Malaysian Film Censorship Board chairman said in his statement that the movie is in poor condition and cannot be presented to the audience.

The film is being directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson with screenplay coming from Kelly Marcel. The movie posters were released by Universal with the famous quote “Mr. Grey will see you now” imprinted on them.

After banning the movie’s release in Malaysia the LPF chairman also said that the flick looked more like a porn film than a proper Hollywood movie. Abdul Hamid was quoted as saying, “The board made a decision in view of the film containing scenes that are not of natural sexual content. The content is more sadistic…,”

The local distributor also confirmed the report that ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ would not release in Malaysia.

With Malaysia opting out of releasing the project, other conservative nations might follow a similar suit. Nevertheless, it will release as planned in the UK, USA and many other countries.
