Every Foodie’s Heaven Lies In These 8 Bollywood Movies!

Did it happen to you?

That you come out of a theatre after watching a movie and there is this lingering taste of an appetizing dish on your tongue, your mouth is watering like a cascade and start to crave for the very same food you just saw being served in the movie!

Yes?

Ahhh… I can so relate to it! You know, it’s an enormous orderly disorder which is called a Foodie Movie Buff!

Now, I am sure you won’t ask me what is that! You know that already, don’t you?

To me, foodie movie buffs are the happiest people on earth for they have endless life coming their way, every day, in the food and movie avatars!

They are the lucky ones who definitely have the best of both worlds.

And my friend, If you are one of them, these 8 bollywood movies for food lovers.

1. Bawarchi

Coming from the canvas of yesteryears, this movie is an absolute heaven for people who believe in earthy cinema and ultimate taste of simplicity. Kaka Rajesh Khanna played a bawarchi (cook) in this flick, who knows the magic of putting life back into anything and everything that goes comatose. He chooses Sharma family as his next job house, which is suffering from the utter love loss, and he does this only for the reason that he lives for – bringing love back! And how does he do it, you may ask? Undoubtedly, food and love take the toast! His skills in the kitchen, are absolutely miraculous! The way he chops vegetables with eyeball-popping speed, stirs two cooking pots at the same time and shares pearls of kitchen wisdom from time to time – such as how to jazz up boring colas with lemon and masala, he comes across as a true kitchen fanatic!

And there is a lot more food in it. Go Watch!

2. Ramji Londonwaley

The R Madhwan starrer flick is still remembered by its title song, “Jaisi bhookh dekhe waisa de niwala, Ramji ke pass hain sabke liye masala”! Which means, he’ll give you just the food to sate your appetite, for each one Ramji gets the spice right”. What a gem of a film, yet a little less known. Maddy played a skilled cook from Bihar who somehow lands in London and forced to do silly stuff to avoid getting deported. He finally catches a job in an Italian eatery and manages to pull a good one there. Well, this one for sure is for all the vegans out there who could take pleasure in Ramji’s desi vegetarian culinary skills, while he brings some of the Indian local Bihari cuisine to the limelight, and the images of the food are…

mmmm… mouthwatering! Taste it.

3. Cheeni Kum

Hell yeah, write food and how could I not jot down this one helluva movie, which served us the most unconventional Bollywood jodi ever. Watching Tabu and  Amitabh Bachchan as a couple was a feast in itself. And to add to it, came the Zafrani Biryani, Murg Rogan Josh, Masaaledaar Kaddu and Yakhni Pulao being served to the entire London. (Why do the all the Indian food wallahs land in London? I am beginning to wonder now!) Nevertheless, the flavour of romance adds to the food to make the movie complete. Big B here plays Buddhadeb Gupta, a London restaurateur who prides himself on the finest Indian food and runs a cellphone-free kitchen. He believes that a perfect Biryani is more colossal an achievement than Da Vinci’s Last Supper, and I so agree there!  The animated argument about the recipe for the perfect Biryani, and lots of food talk and food tips through the length of the movie, keep us glued to it.  What should go in first into hot oil – hing or onions? At what stage of cooking should lime juice be added? Cheeni Kum gives you the answers.

And a lot of eye feast to the foodie movie buffs! Wanna sample?

4. Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana

Ok, to an extent, this reminded me of animation genius Kung Fu Panda. Because this too revolves around finding a secret ingredient to make a delectable chicken palate! There sure is a lot of mystery masala, and loads of feast for the eyes as we get to see the delicacies in the most traditional earthy Indian style.  This movie made me crave chicken curry like crazy! A young foreign returned (read runaway) lad played by handsome Kunal Kapoor, sets out to catch hold of the secret recipe of his grandpa’s world-famous chicken by the method of trial and error, making some mouth-watering chicken in the process, assisted in this whole escapade by his lady love played by Huma Qureshi. The culmination of the movie is quirky, and packs a punch so delicious that it leaves you begging for more.

Dig in today!

5. Daawat-E-Ishq

Oh man, even the thought of this flick is hitting my senses hard and I want the authentic Lucknawi food right now! This flick stars bindaas babe Parineeti Chopra and cutely adorable Aditya Roy Kapur. The plot of the movie completely revolves around food. Well, ok! The romance is there too! As if I was paying attention to it. This Yash Raj Films produce brings to us some royal and awesomely bonafide Lucknawi cuisines in their most scrumptious forms. When love blossoms between the hero and the heroine, amidst the brain teasing aromas and mouthful flavours of succulent Biryanis and Kebabs, the upshot is sure to blow the minds of all the foodie movie buffs! My today’s treat for sure!

The taste buds as well as the heart.

6. English Vinglish

The sweet little movie with the added sweetness of homemade laddoos! Shashi, the conventional Indian homemaker, played by none other than Sridevi, wishes to come over her fears and insecurities and sets out to learn English, that too in a completely alien city like New York. While she excels at that too, she never ceases to floor us with her perfect looking little balls of joy, the laddoos that we see in many scenes in the movie, and served with utmost care. Also, the culinary discussions among Shashi and her French chef classmate, take the movie to a different level altogether, which of course creates a bonding among these two. Well, I just could not take those laddoos off my mind, days after I watched it. Just wanted to dig my teeth into one, right there and then and let it melt in my mouth. I bet you would too!

7. Stanley Ka Dabba

A treat for young, old and kids alike, this movie wins my vote, hands down. While it talks about a vicious teacher who has a tongue hanging out for every student’s tiffin box, it also gave us good glimpses of homemade food every now and then. I could literally feel the aroma hitting my nostrils, each time a dabba came into sight. With the lesser known artists and yet the super emotional drama that it serves alongside, the movie doesn’t fail to stimulate the foodie’s tongue and stirs up the appetite to a great extent. I had to head to a restaurant, immediately after I left the theatre. Go get the effect!.

8. The Lunchbox

The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach! And what could be a better way to prove this saying, than a foodie flick? Marvellously captured silent love story between ace performers like Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur, it will leave you smiling and awfully hungry at the same time. This movie would be liked by people who can appreciate non-commercial cinema. The appeal of the movie is such, that it brings you back to a real life canvas, where you start to value a regular home cooked meal. In meticulous bits and pieces, the movie cleverly captures the flawlessness of a perfect meal prepared in a domestic kitchen. From elaborate khatte baingan to fragrant tadka dal, office lunches were never so luscious. No doubt the movie made it to the British Academy Film Awards nominations, gloriously. Go open the lunchbox today!
