On Monday, The Supreme Court directed that the trial in all the criminal offences involving sitting members of Parliament and the legislatures should be concluded within one year by holding it on a day to day basis. Right before the elections begin in the country, this drive by our Apex Court to ride out the corruption and crime from the politics, is a great move ahead. The court stated that in cases where the trial could not be concluded due to special, extraordinary circumstances, this will be communicated to the chief justice of the high court concerned with the reasons.
So where does this land our ‘criminalists’ politicos? For the ones who get elected (by the public) in the coming general elections and also have pending criminal and corruption cases lodged against them, the verdict of the Supreme Court will be out before May next year. So, if the leader is found guilty, he/she will be sentenced to more than two years imprisonment and will immediately lose their membership status. Furthermore, this order can have a bearing effect on political party from where the leader represents. So to censure this effect, the political parties must ensure that they do not field candidates with criminal background.
So just imagine after a bright campaign by a top political leader, the entire hullabaloo surrounding it, might just go down the drain if found that one of their ‘starry leader’ has just committed a heinous crime and could be reprimanded by the Apex court.
Even though the Supreme Court has taken these drastic measures about cleansing the criminal politics surrounding our country today, somewhere, the steps still fall short. Even having a fast-track court that could help solve the solutions, the snail-paced process of the Supreme Court directs the same way our political leaders work!
This drive is run by the Supreme Court to clean the politics but OUR drive should be – DO NOT VOTE FOR CRIMINAL LEADERS!
