Eligibility
To pursue a career in geology, a graduate degree is sufficient. However, it is suggested that you have a science background before you decide to take up a career in Geology. For Bachelor’s you need to have passed HSC with Science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Maths/Biology. For Master’s you can apply with any stream as your graduate degree.
Job prospects
A career in geology offers the prospect of ding much more than sitting behind a desk. Most companies that go for college placements prefer a candidate with Master’s degree, as that would highlight the field of specialization of the candidate. Apart from oil and gas fields, jobs are also offered by companies with a profile that of petroleum, forestry, ecology, mining and natural resources, environmental management project, site recommendation, surveying, renewable energy, etc.
Pay Package
A geologist’s work profile decides the amount of salary he/she withdraws. While job opportunities are great in this field, the pay package increases with experience. While a graduate can earn as much as Rs 2-3 lakhs per annum, a post graduate without experience can begin with Rs 4 lakh and can go up to Rs 20 lakhs per annum, on gaining relevant experience.
