Doing your job is what you are paid for, whereas a raise is a sign that your manager notices your contribution at a higher level than what you were originally hired to do. Accomplishing only what your job roles ask for and demanding a hike for a small effort you took on some other project is most likely to make your importance fade. Maybe you are a hard worker and never fail to help your colleagues. But that may not be enough if you have not updated your skills in a long time. Try signing up for certification courses or seek help from co-workers who have an updated skill profile.

Lastly, convince yourself that you need a raise, and that it is quite justified. Because unless, you’re able to convince yourself, you won’t be able to convince your boss.
