A conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said that rural and farm tourism would lure domestic as well as international tourists as it will provide them with an opportunity to experience India’s rich traditions and culture.
“Indians have forgotten their roots and developing villages and farms into tourist spots would give them a chance to revisit their culture. The foreigners too will get to know about the real India where the majority lives,” said S.K. Misra, chairman of Indian Trust for Rural Heritage and Development.
“Rural India has a lot to offer in terms of arts, crafts, culture and food,” he said.
According to Sumita Misra, secretary and managing director of Haryana Tourism, the farm and rural tourism scheme has been profitable for the states which have adopted it.
“We had launched the scheme in 2003 and is running successful in places like Jhajjar, Karnal, Rohtak etc.,” she said.
According to officials, tourists can have a real world experience of participating in a bullock cart race, farming, grinding wheat, fishing etc. which are unique and offer a totally different experience.
However, there is an urgent need to upgrade facilities and teach skills to villagers.
“The villagers and farm owners need special training as part of the upgradation,” said Misra.
