In a move proposed by the Apex court, it suggested that former India skipper and legendary Indian batsmen, Sunil Gavaskar should be named as the BCCI president as current chief N Srinivasan will step aside due to the pending inquiry. Furthermore, the court also proposed that employees of India Cements, of which Srinivasan is managing director, and which owns CSK, should not be part of the BCCI set-up. Also, they asked for the exclusion of two IPL teams, the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from participating in the seventh season of Indian Premier League.
Has the Supreme Court made a bold move by moving for a former cricketer to run of India’s largest and richest sports body? Sunil Gavaskar has been a member of the BCCI committee as well as served the chairman of the ICC cricket committee. Nowadays, the former cricketer serves as a commentator cum pundit for news channels and in purely cricketing terms, been vocal about Indian team’s failings abroad.
Speaking to news channel after the Supreme Court’s proposal, Gavaskar hinted that he is prepared to take the hot seat. He said, “First and foremost, if the highest court suggests something, you have to do so but that has to be on record. I am currently contracted with BCCI as a commentator. But if Supreme Court wants me to do that, I will do it. When the Supreme Court asks you, there is no question about it, there is not much you can do and I will be happy to do what they ask me to do”, Gavaskar told a news channel.
Clearly, the great man is ready for the job and so be it. Give him the stake at hand and let him run the richest sport gag in the country. Surely, he will do well. Unlike the old man from South who failed to turn the chords the right way, Gavaskar has the mentality to run an administration and knows how to clean it thoroughly.
“I will consider it”, Gavaskar says. Surely, he should, with the BCCI in total shambles and as far their administration is considered, there is no ‘cricket’ in it. If there is anything then it’s just money, money and only money!
What will Gavaskar bring to the fore if appointed as chairman, will be what we all want to see. Get him and let’s bring the good old days back to Indian cricket, again!
