With an all important cricket tour that includes Australia and the World Cup, BCCI have rested regular skipper MS Dhoni for the upcoming Sri Lanka 5-match series and giving the reigns to Virat Kohli.
This is not the first time Virat has been handed over the ‘hotseat’ as the former was also leading the charge last year when regular captain MS Dhoni got injured in the first ODI of the 2013 triangular series in West Indies.
Virat has led India in 12 ODIs so far with 9 wins and 3 losses to his name.

Tri-series in the Caribbean
After triumphing in the ICC Champions Trophy in England, India made a long trip to the West Indies to take part in the tri-series that included current opponents Sri Lanka and the hosts. In the initial stage, MS Dhoni got injured and thus, Kohli became the under study. In the series, skipper Virat Kohli scored 102 off 83 balls plus the Men In Blue won the series as well.
India vs. Zimbabwe
Then came the Zimbabwe series, where the selectors send a second string side to the African country. With most of the top names rested, Virat Kohli led the side in the 5-match series against Zimbabwe in 2013. This was the first time, Kohli was handed the reins as a fully fledged skipper of the team as the former smashed 197 runs and also take a clean sweep in the series.
Asia Cup 2014
With MS Dhoni out injured again, Virat again stepped in the captain’s shoes during the 2014 Asia Cup. The Asia Cup began in grand style for the Delhi dasher who smashed an exemplary 136 off 122 balls against Bangladesh to give India a booming start in the tournament. But luck didn’t favour the World Champions as Sri Lanka went onto win the tourney by beating Pakistan in the final.
Virat is touted as India’s future captain and this might be the right time to portray the skills on the international stage. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 might be Dhoni’s last and from thereon, Virat and none better deserves a chance to take India forward.
