If Indian cricketing legends like Sunil Gavaskar and MK Pataudi have been immortalised by being named on a particular series, well, how could the numero uno cricket star of India be left behind?
If reports are to be believed, talks are on amongst the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to name a series after India’s most celebrated cricketer ever – Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.
Even though the cricketer turned Parliamentarian might not demand one but according to a report in noted news daily, the BCCI is in consideration over a series to be named after Tendulkar, with the move expected to be signed, sealed and delivered in the board’s Working Committee meeting on September 26.
“It’s prestigious. While honouring a legend like Sachin, we have to make sure that we choose a marquee series. We don’t want to institute a series in Sachin’s name just for the sake of doing it,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel was quoted in the newspaper.
If one is not well known with the trivia about cricket in our country, then here’s IQ leveller – Sunil Gavaskar and the late Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi’s name have been associated with a series with the former associating in Australia in the Border-Gavaskar trophy, the winners’ cup for a Test series between England and India in England is called The Pataudi Trophy.
So what’s the fuss about it anyway? The first priority for the BCCI would be which country will be representing the historic series. One can imagine the likes of Australia, England and South Africa coming to the fore since the 41-year enjoyed making merry against these formidable oppositions. The other contemporaries can be the likes of Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The Indian sub-continent has given rise to many top stars like Muttiah Muralidharan, Wasim Akram and to name a few.
Even though the BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel was evasive about the approach of the Indian board on taking such a huge decision, he stated, “It is too premature to talk about it at the moment.” But the cricketer who has passionately taken his fling for football recently, co-owing one of the ISL clubs (Kerela Blasters); Sachin Tendulkar is still humming to the tunes of cricket. The 41-year old did predict that the Indian team (ODI) will be one of the strong contenders at the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The champion player, who quit playing cricket last year, will also be releasing his autobiography in November this year. But overall, it’s a nice gesture by the BCCI to name a series after Sachin, after all, the man owed cricket a lot!
