Former India Captain Sunil Gavaskar has come down heavily on current Indian cricket team coach Duncan Fletcher and said it is time to replace him and bring in someone who is young, energetic and whose ideas can fire up players ahead of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2015.
We agree totally with Mr. Gavaskar’s comments and certainly Duncan Fletcher has not lived up to everybody’s expectations. Here’s the reason why the Zimbabwe-born coach deserves the boot from the BCCI:
Unable to guide the batsmen
Since the Australia series in India, our batsmen have failed to hit the high scores on overseas tours. Rohit Sharma, who holds the record of being the third double centurion in ODI history, has faded into the limelight. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni have too succumbed to failures and could not do much with the bat. Fletcher has failed to take notice of these and that’s why, Team India continues to flop on foreign soil.
Duncan, what’s the role of Joe Dawes?
If Ishant Sharma was the supposed target of being the worst bowler for India off late, well, the rest to can take the blame. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami are not amongst the wickets regularly and especially end up leaking runs in the final overs. Bowling coach, Joe Dawes is under the scanner of not guiding the Indian pacers and it seems Duncan Fletcher is not bothered one bit!
Incapable of guiding our spinners
Our spin department, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are lethal when playing home but become clueless, once abroad. Ashwin has come under the flak for his poor away record and Fletcher is mum about the spinners’ performance.
Where is the talk about youth, Mr. Duncan?
When the likes of Ishwar Pandey and Stuart Binny were roped in the ODI team, for New Zealand and Asia Cup, one might have thought of breath of fresh air amongst the Indian contingent. But Fletcher proved us wrong by not playing Ishwar Pandey in any official game and Stuart Binny failed to impress (lack of trust from the management). Also, spinner Amit Mishra who impressed in the Asia Cup, was warming the benches all while in New Zealand and South Africa.
Is Duncan Fletcher told not to speak?
All this while, in the wake of Indian team’s poor performance, the coach has decided to stay mum. Has the BCCI kept Fletcher media-shy? Or is that Fletcher has nothing ‘new’ to say? Whatever the reasons, the current coach needs to speak up and let us all know, what’s ailing this team.
The Indian cricket team continues its downfall with the recent being the Asia Cup. Under Duncan Fletcher, India did emerge victorious in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in England and then won series’ in West Indies and India. Since then, Duncan Fletcher has failed to take this young side ahead and with an important World Cup ahead, the Zimbabwean needs to buck up or else say adieu!
