After a disappointing loss to one of the contenders for the T20 World Cup title, Sri Lanka, South Africa are looking to bounce back against the high flying, New Zealand.
The Proteas are without a doubt, stronger in the batting and bowling department that can send shivers to any opposition. Going into this game, South Africa still ponder about their selections as far as their skipper is concerned – Faf du Plessis is trying to get back into the squad and trying to shake off the hamstring niggle. Dale Steyn still looks short of full fitness while the likes of David Miller and star batsman, AB de Villiers failed to impress in the first outing at the T20 World Cup.
In their 11 meetings so far in T20 internationals are concerned, South Africa have an edge over the Kiwis, winning eight matches in total. But New Zealand cannot be overlooked. Their batting still remains a strong component with the likes of Ross Taylor, Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum waiting in line to send the ball over the line. All-rounder Corey Anderson can come in the middle overs, if required and start hitting some huge sixes. New Zealand won their last game against England via Duckworth and Lewis method but with weather not playing a part in today’s game, the former might want to impress the detractors.
South Africa goes into this tie as favourites but New Zealand does possess those ‘extra chunk’ in their batting armour to go the distance. Lack of spinning options might worry South Africa but they need to win this tie, to stay alive in the tournament.
On the other hand, the Kiwis are in a good form and skipper Brendon McCullum would like to keep the form going.
Very hard to call this tie but with a ‘deadly’ batting combination, just favour South Africa to take the result. AB de Villiers is badly needed here and so is JP Duminy! Teams:
