He said, “It has definitely weakened Srinivasan’s position. He has to recuse himself according to corporate principles because it is a clear case of conflict of interest. Corporate governance is a very important factor. You can’t have tainted people to run international cricket.” he said. So this explains N. Srinivasan’s current state in the cricketing fraternity. The current BCCI chief is set to swoop in as the head of ICC after the latter agreed to the ‘changes’ of the ‘Big 3’ which means India, Australia and England will have a fair share of its dealings in the cricketing head body.
So why is ‘Srini’ in the news lately? Who can forget those damning scenes in the aftermath of the ‘spot-fixing’ scandal that rocked the Indian Premier League in 2013 where Srinivasan’s son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested for his inclusion in the betting scandal.
What more, after an extensive investigation, a Supreme Court panel recently reported that Gurunath Meiyappan was guilty of illegal betting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and allegations of match-fixing against him should be further probed. So will we see another fiasco unfold from the BCCI? Will N Srinivasan step down as ICC chief?
For the time being, No! The soon-to-be ICC Head Chief will remain in seat so long there are no further notices from the Supreme Court. But where exactly is the Chennai-honcho headed?
In the time where cricket as a sport has to spread, people like N. Srinivasan are totally debarring the ideology where sport runs over money. In his money minded ways, Srinivasan is a twisted-imprudent and financially laden scion that hangs in between the likes of Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark. Generally, Srinivasan belongs to a country like India where administrators of sporting bodies are politically motivated or own multi-faceted companies.
“I can’t see Srinivasan stepping down just because of the report since he himself has not been found guilty of anything. Besides, he is in total control of the board. Who is going to go against him?” a BCCI source was quoted talking to AFP. In length, it describes the longevity of the man who has kept his powers over cricket as a sport. Team India over the years has accumulated successes that included T20, 50-over World Cups and Champions Trophy triumphs.
When MS Dhoni was all set to leave for the ICC Champions Trophy last year, he was asked in a press conference on his view over the spot-fixing scenario. The skipper smiled and kept mum for a while and later quipped that he will answer ‘at the right time’. But the time has escalated and as we look forward to a new ICC Head, will be the governing council be as murkier or will the new rules change the face of cricket? Whatever it may be, Srinivasan has a lot to worry and ponder about over the few coming weeks.
